No one really wants to have to make a claim on their insurance policy, but sometimes it’s necessary. When the time comes for you to make a claim, here’s what you need to do.
Check You’re Covered
The first step to take when you want to make a claim on your insurance policy is check that you’re covered. You don’t want to waste time making a claim if you’re not covered by your existing policy. You can check your copy of the policy. And if you’re still not sure, you can contact your insurance provider and let them analyse the case for you. Alternatively, you could hire an assessor to help you work out how much the damage will cost to put right. You will have to pay for this service though.
Check Your Excess
One of the first things to do before filing your claim is check your excess. Everyone has a certain excess level in their policy. This is the amount of money that you will be required to pay yourself before the insurance company is required to step in and cover the costs. You will not be able to claim for costs that are less than your excess. And if the cost is small, it might be a good idea to pay for the cost yourself rather than making a claim and losing your no-claims discount.
File Your Claim
Your insurance company is required to help you when it comes to making a claim. And they’re also required to let you know of their decision with regards to your case within 10 days of that decision being made. How long the case takes to settle once it has been filed depends on what kind of case it is. There is no set timeframe on these cases, so you might need to remain patient. Once they’ve decided whether you are covered for the incident that occurred, it shouldn’t be too long before you hear their decision.
Personal Injury Cases
When you get injured as a result of someone else’s mistake, you don’t have to accept the cash amount offered by an insurance company. Instead, you can reject it and refer your claim to the Injuries Board. This was set up by the government, and it helps to decide the amount of compensation you should receive after a personal injury. You can apply to the Injuries Board directly on their website. You can also choose to reject their findings and take your case to court if you feel that’s necessary.
Someone Claiming Against You
When someone is making a claim against you through your insurance company, the company is not required to inform you of the result. If you want to be a part of the process, you’ll have to inform your insurance company. If you don’t agree with the settlement that the insurance company reaches, you will probably have to make a complaint to the company. Weigh up whether or not this is worth it before you go ahead though.
